Creative Talent- Young and Old – Being Sought

Regional annual Festival offers prizes and recognition for two- and three- dimensional creations

MONTOUR FALLS, NY— The lazy days of summer are an ideal time for accomplishing creative projects; and organizers of a popular regional festival hope to attract the most creative of all age categories in an upcoming event.

Now is the time to start to think about your artistic ability for The Falls Harvest Festival. Taking place on Saturday, October 11, 2008 in downtown Montour Falls, the festival will feature several contests highlighting the creative and artistic talent of our area, including a scarecrow contest, an art competition and even a pumpkin carving competition! Last year, the event attracted an estimated 3,000-5,000 people, according to organizers at the Schuyler County Chamber of Commerce/Watkins Glen Promotions.

The Festival’s Art Competition is the latest addition to the fanfare, thanks to the generosity and assistance of Henderson’s Montour Pharmacy. Artists are asked to depict the Village’s 156-foot tumbling waterfall- Shequagua Falls, in any two-dimensional media, with the exception of photography. Shequagua Falls is at the heart of the historic district, locally known as The Glorious “T,” on South Genesee Street and at the end of West Main Street. Winners of the competition will have their artwork featured on a set of note cards to be packaged and sold to the public in selected local retail establishments.

The Festival’s second annual Scarecrow Competition has cash prize of $50! Gather up old clothing, recyclable materials and create a Scarecrow to grace the festival grounds. Prize money is made possible for the second year in a row by the support of Chemung Canal Trust Company. Judges on hand the day of the festival will select scarecrows deemed The Most Original, The Most Humorous, and the Best of  Show in each of the three age categories:  Children (12 and under); Teens (13-18) and Family/Adult (18 and over).  Businesses and/or Groups are also encouraged to enter as well as families.

A Pumpkin Carving Contest is also being offered, with additional details to follow. With only 70 days to spare until The Falls Harvest Festival, it doesn’t hurt to begin sketching ideas! For more information, or for the required contest entry forms, please visit the Watkins Glen Promotion’s website at http://www.watkinsglen.com/promotions/ , or call 535-3003.

About the festival/additional information: This event is organized through Watkins Glen Promotions, an entity of the Schuyler County Chamber of Commerce.

The Festival will culminate with a firework display cascading from the top of Shequagua Falls in the center of the Village of Montour Fall, following the live evening concert of original music by Ithaca's COMMON RAILERS from 5:00-8:00pm.

All creative entries shall be on display throughout the day, and judges will select award winners by 5:00pm. These winners will be announced soon after, from the festival's music stage by WFLR's Dick Evans, the festival's Master of Ceremonies.

Please note that entry applications for all the above competitions are required in advance for proper placement on the festival grounds.

*Winners of the art competition will be judged on originality and technical proficiency in their medium and within the grade categories of K-3; 4-6; 7-9, and 10- 12. The competition is open to all Schuyler County students, grades K-12, in any of the county’s school districts as well as those home schooled or attending parochial school.  Each winner will receive a set of note cards, an award certificate, and the opportunity to publicly display their work.
