The Ambiance: In such a convenience-driven age, where heavily commercialized fast-food restaurant chains line every street corner in every town, multifaceted establishments such as Market Street Brewing Company remind patrons of the sheer pleasure of dining or enjoying a brew away from home. This elegant pub is rich with options, and one can choose to dine indoors in the rooftop seating area or in the bier-garten, a delicately lighted courtyard alive with the rapturous rumble-utterances and sights of Market Street. Or, if one simply stops in to enjoy a brew, he or she will revel in the historical delights of the bar area, a rustic amalgam of antique woods and pieces acquired from Mark Cherry, owner of Philadelphia’s Architectural Antique Exchange. Whether patrons are tourists, families with small children, individuals with physical disabilities, or simply hungry or thirsty people, the swank atmosphere, complete with outstanding service and an eclectic offering of provisions, is sure to make every drinker and diner a MSBC habitué.

The Brews: Market Street Brewing Company features six brews on tap: Wrought Iron Red, Mad Bug Lager, Brisco Bridge Blackberry Lager, Potbelly Pale Ale, as well as a seasonal brew. The brews taste refreshingly smooth, and are a bit on the light side. Each exhibits, as their names would suggest, quite unique and complex tastes. The Blackberry Lager is especially interesting since it conjures images of sunshine and summertime with its surprisingly light, fruity finish. If they all sound good, then try the beer sample platter, or take home a refillable growler. For guests who aren’t ardent beer enthusiasts, MSBC mindfully serves local wines and specialty coffees with tempting fusions of popular liqueurs.

The Victuals: MSBC is anything but a run-of-the-mill, factory-style eatery. The menu consists of jazzy dishes abounding with fresh, contrasting flavors, as well as upscale reinventions of pub-style food. The MSBC Soup is utterly delicious; the generous chunks of fresh, crisp-tender artichokes are accentuated by the lemon-cream base and fresh rosemary. Equally tasty and the perfect complement to a pint of liquid tasty are the loaded MSBC chips—crisp, real potato slices smothered in a tantalizing cheesy beer sauce with hints of jalapeno—and topped with real bacon pieces. And the presentation? Equally outstanding. Crisp, colorful salads and appetizers arrive on smooth, square ivory plates that evoke images of the Japanese bamboo-style platters upon which sushi is served.
